The first living person on a state license plate had what occupation?
Although she is hard to recognize bundled up in a snowsuit and goggles, the person hitting the slopes on Utah’s “Greatest Snow on Earth” license plate is three-time Olympian (and Utah resident) Heidi Voelker. She is not only the first living person to grace a license plate, but also the first ever woman.

New Mexico’s license plate has what unique attribute?
Presumably to remind geographically-challenged motorists from other states that New Mexico isn’t part of actual Mexico, the “Land of Enchantment” has printed “USA” on its license plates since 1967. A recent popular plate design celebrating their centennial as a state omits this data, but hopefully it won’t lead to too much confusion.

What state’s license plate has remained mostly unchanged since 1958?
Most states change up their plate design every five years or so, but Delaware has been rocking the same classic gold-on-blue look since 1958 — the longest-running license plate design in the country. Residents with the state’s earliest registration numbers are allowed to use an even older white-on-black design, which have become highly sought-after prestige items. In 2018, one sold for $410,000.

The license plates of Canada’s Northwest Territories are shaped like what?
In 1957, North American governments and auto groups came to an agreement that license plates would be six inches tall, twelve inches wide, and have five standard holes for attachment. What they did not decree was that the license plates had to be rectangular. Canada’s Northwest Territories took advantage of this loophole and designed it in the shape of its most beloved residents — polar bears.

Which of these vehicles are not required to have license plates?
U.S. Postal Service mail trucks were given a federal exemption from needing license plates in 1973. The first U.S. license plates displayed what information?
In 1901, New York passed a law requiring automobiles to display the initials of the car owner in three-inch-tall letters. This display was homemade rather than state-issued and sometimes simply painted on the car. Within two years it became apparent there simply weren’t enough initial permutations to keep things straight, so in 1903, the Secretary of State began issuing numbers to automobiles.

What words are found on Washington DC’s license plates?
Despite paying federal taxes, Washington, D.C., residents have no representatives in Congress. In 2000, a Washington woman suggested “Taxation Without Representation” for the city’s license plates as a call back to the 1756 Stamp Act, one of the precursors to the American Revolution. In 2016, the slogan was amended to “End Taxation Without Representation.”

Which state’s license plate was the first to feature an image?
Before 1928, license plates were purely functional: simply a registration number and the state the car was registered in. But as America began its love affair with cars and road trips became popular, Idaho realized license plates could act as miniature billboards. They featured their most famous product, a large spud, along with the first license plate slogan “Idaho Potatoes.”

What image appears on North Carolina’s license plate?
Celebrating the Wright Brothers’ historic flight in the town of Kitty Hawk in 1903, North Carolina’s “First in Flight” license plate depicts their famous plane, the Wright Flyer. However, in a bit of aeronautical rivalry, Ohio’s license plate also claims it is “The Birthplace of Aviation,” since the Wright Brothers did their designing and building in the Buckeye State.
